LINDOS
The pretty village of Lindos is an artist's dream - a cluster of dazzling white sugar-cube houses clinging to the hillside below a fortified acropolis, looking down onto a superb crescent of golden sand in a beautiful bay.
The narrow village streets wind among houses with tiny courtyards paved in mosaics made of black and white pebbles, and despite the numerous bars, tourist shops and travel offices, the atmosphere and character of Lindos is quite unique, and many people wouldn't think of holidaying anywhere else.
The village is entirely pedestrianised. The only modes of transport allowed are donkeys, mopeds and bikes. The charm of this village is maintained by a preservation order which forbids any unauthorised building work to change it.
By day, you can visit the Acropolis or spend a few hours on the glorious beaches. At night, you can enjoy the lively nightlife in the village bars, rooftop tavernas and discos when the sun goes down!
In order to make your way to the top of the Acropolis itself, you can take advantage of the donkey taxi service, however it’s not recommended on the way back down as they have been known to race back knowing that they get fed and watered!
The Acropolis is where you’ll find the remaining Doric columns of the Temple of Athena Lindia and you’ll be able to take photos of the surrounding area from the highest point. The views from the summit are a treat. You'll see over the village and its main beach and little Pallas Beach, and St Paul's Bay on the other side of the Acropolis. The quaint, little chapel at St Paul's Bay has become very popular for weddings and the surrounding bay provides a perfect setting for a special occasion.
The local ladies sell hand embroidered lace items, a tradition that dates back to Alexander the Great but you’ll also find a wealth of shopping to be had in the myriad of shops.
PEFKOS
Pefkos means 'pine tree', and this attractive village enjoys the shade and scent of several of them, basking in the sunshine on its own pretty little bay where a fabulous beach of soft, clean yellow sand slides into clear warm seas.
Just five kilometres south of Lindos, Pefkos has escaped the attentions of the day-trippers who flock to see its famous neighbour, but is now coming into its own as a lively little resort with sophisticated restaurants, music bars and even a disco. There are umbrellas and pedaloes for hire on the beach, but watersports are not always available.
At night when all the streets light up, you can take a stroll and take a glance at the fine shops or a quaint restaurant to eat some of the finest Greek food. The bars in Pefkos always have something exciting to offer; great music, karaoke or even a Greek night with some traditional dancing.
LARDOS
Lardos, an exciting inland village with its wonderful charm has many opportunities for the holidaymaker. On the southeastern part of the island, Lardos town square holds its old age charm with cafes, Restaurants and bars. Lardos is a warm village, which offers you both the new and the old world. You can just visit one of the cafes or bars of the village at any time of the day, have a frappe (iced coffee) and watch people stroll along. Alternatively you can visit one of the restaurants, which serve you traditional food, like "Pastitsio" or Grilled lamb. Try one of the bars at night for a nice cool cocktail or even a glass of "Ouzo".
The church of Agios Taxiarchas tucked away in the older part of the village and its impressive bell tower and tall cypress trees crowd the entrance to the courtyard is a sight to see. Lardos is located about 2km away from Lardos Bay and 3Km away from Glystra Beach. With its long stretch of beaches, you can always enjoy the sun but also do some snorkeling and other types of water sports, like tubing or water skiing.
An Italian Era Vrissi (fountain) set in the middle of the square is always a great place to cool off.
VLICHA BAY
Just north of Lindos itself, Vlicha Bay is a magnificent sweep of sand and pebble beach, overlooked by impressive four-star hotels with magnificent sea views. This 'beach' is too large ever to feel crowded, and the crystal clear waters are perfect for snorkelling. There are a couple of restaurants, a supermarket and souvenir shop.
KALATHOS
Kalathos is a traditional village which can be found just a few kilometers north of the ancient town of Lindos. Kalathos Village is small and charming and a very popular destination for holidaymakers looking for typical Greek hospitality.
Sample some traditional Greek dishes in one of the local tavernas, or enjoy an evening drink with fellow holidaymakers and the locals in one of the welcoming bars. During the day, take a stroll down to Kalathos beach, a 10 minute walk from the village, to enjoy over 10 miles of beautiful, clean and peaceful beach. There are also a number of beachside tavernas where you can have a relaxing lunch.
